CONCERT BAND

American Hymn Suite (2015) 12 min.

Three American hymn tunes are set in various colors in the band - a lively dance to "Nettleton", a mournful chorale on "Resignation", and a passacaglia on "Holy Manna" that runs the gamut from mischievous to bombastic. [Hard]

The Clockwork Battalion (2021) 4 min.

Holy Manna (2015) 4 min.

This passacaglia, the third movement of the American Hymn Suite, is inspired by the style of Percy Aldridge Grainger. The same tune is passed through every choir of the ensemble in ways that range from jazzy to quirky to triumphant. [Medium hard]

Nettleton (2015) 3.5 min.

The first movement of the American Hymn Suite begins with an extended percussion introduction featuring a cajon soloist. The movement includes a highly syncopated rendition of the tune (often sung as "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing") and a development section that spans all twelve keys. [Medium hard]

Resignation (2015) 4.5 min.

The Twenty-third Psalm is the basis of the lyrics often used with this tune, which I have set as the second movement of the American Hymn Suite. A solo euphonium is allowed to echo through the air before being joined by the rest of the brass choir and then the remainder of the band in three different harmonizations of the solemn chorale. [Medium]

Ritual (2014) 6 min.

The concepts behind rituals are universal and ubiquitous. This piece takes the band through a somber and meaningful ritual from the swearing of solemn oaths through the primitive drums and the powerful and possibly sinister initiatic rites, hidden by cover of darkness. [Medium hard]

This Too Shall Pass (2019) 4 min.

All life is uncertain. All tension must resolve. All moments must pass. This piece represents these universal ideas musically through suspended, extended, layered harmonies, long interconnected melody and countermelody, and tonal ambiguity where a resolution should otherwise be. Whether times are good or bad, this too shall pass. [Medium easy]

CHORAL

Adam lay ybounden (2019) 4 min. - SATB unaccomp./trumpet

A Middle English poem is intoned in the first movement of the Christmas Cantata, with a lost and lonely trumpet calling among the lost and lonely voices lamenting the Fall of Man. [Medium]

Bid Your Servant Go (2020) 4 min. - SATB accomp./cello

The Nunc dimittis is the subject of this slow and gentle song of relief, the tenth movement of the Christmas Cantata, whose melodies are modeled after early American hymns. [Medium easy]

Every Time I Feel the Spirit (2018) 2 min. - SATB unaccomp.

"Every time I feel the Spirit moving in my heart, I will pray", says the refrain of this enduring spiritual. I have arranged it to range from soulful and syrupy to fast and passionate. [Medium]

He Leadeth Me (2017) 3 min. - SATB accomp./rhythm, with solo

The traditionally popular if somewhat strait-laced hymn gets a bluesy gospel arrangement. It starts soft and builds to an ecstatic climax. [Medium]

In Flanders Fields (2017) 3.5 min. - 2-part accomp., with solo

Col. John McCrae's evocative poem about the lost of the First World War is set here for two-part choir and soloist in a mournful style inspired by Gaelic folk song. [Easy]

CHAMBER

Möbius (2013) 3+ min. (saxophone quartet)

[soprano/alto/tenor/baritone]

A Möbius loop is a type of endless strange loop - it is a mathematical quirk in that it is a plane with only one side. Half the loop is retracing the other half upside down. With this in mind, the second half of this piece is the inversion of the first half across both a single note and across the score. As the second half draws to a close, the instrumentalists return to the beginning to repeat ad infinitum[Medium]

00:00 / 03:03

Neutrino (2014) 6 min. (unaccompanied saxophone)

The massless but massively important particle, the neutrino, is explored in all its hidden wonders. The saxophone takes the neutrinos from the crucibles of the suns where they are born, through the vast loneliness of deep space, and throughout the universe. [Hard]

A Walking Shadow (2010) 6 min. (brass choir)

[3 trumpets/horn/3 trombones or euphoniums/tuba, with alternates]

Based on Macbeth, Shakespeare's tale of magic and murder, this piece highlights four scenes from the Scottish Play: Macbeth's fateful meeting with three witches, his clandestine murder of the king to steal the throne, his horrible haunting by the friend he has had assassinated, and his final stand against the prince's army, moving under cover of the forest.
